Preemption Project
Launched in 2013, the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance’s Preemption Project was created to help cities and counties across Idaho comply with the state’s firearm preemption law. Many local governments still have outdated ordinances that conflict with current state law and need to be updated.
In some cases, municipalities have unlawfully prohibited the carrying of firearms in public spaces—such as parks and government buildings—despite lacking the legal authority to do so.
To address these issues, we’re conducting a comprehensive review of municipal codes statewide. When we identify violations, we notify elected officials and request that the necessary corrections be made.
Below are the results of the Preemption Project to date.
